We have many conversations with people after-the-fact. People
who come to us to discuss having a tracker installed, realising
that a stolen vehicle isn't always that easy to get paid out
on or replace.
In one such conversation someone told us about his Land Rover
Discovery that had been stolen from his drive. The owner had
left his keys visible in his kitchen, thieves had broken in
and stolen his keys. Problem is they entered without forcing
entry, no signs whatsoever. The police were called, a crime
number raised but so far the insurance company are refusing
to pay out!
A similar but more worrying story was another 4x4 being hit
from behind at a junction, not too hard but significant enough.
The owner gets out of the car, leaving the keys in it. The
driver of the offending vehicle kept the owner busy until
his passenger had jumped in the 4x4 and both sped away leaving
the owner of the 4x4 in the middle of the road .... car-less.
Another story we were recently told about was a motorcycle
stolen in London. Stopping at a set of traffic lights, two
mopeds pulled along side both 2-up . One of the pillions jumped
off the bike, grabbed the keys out of the ignition. The motorcycle
owner gave chase, he lost the key thief but by the time he
got back he could only watch has his bike was being pushed
away, at great speed, by one of the mopeds. Having no witnesses,
having lost his key, again the insurance company did not make
it easy to claim. He is still fighting this almost a year
after the event.
The moral to the story, never leave keys on show, never get
out the car leaving the keys in the car and for bikers the
advice is use a lanyard to the yoke to prevent the keys being
snatched. But one of the most important things is to be able
to prove the theft. Use your mobile phones camera/ video if
you are shunted. Security cameras are a good idea and in the
event of the motorcyclist a helmet-cam.
Hopefully this article will raise awareness of some of the
creative antics thieves are using to steal vehicles, if you
